Tysons Corner Center

The Tysons Corner Center is situated in the Tysons Corner unincorporated area in Fairfax County, Virginia. The shopping mall had its official opening in 1968 and became one of the first fully-enclosed, climate-controlled shopping malls in the Washington metropolitan area. Not only does it have the reputation of being the biggest shopping mall in the entire state as well as in the Baltimore-Washington area but Tysons Corner is also one of the most popular shopping centers. Its location is merely 12.5 miles from the Central Business District of Washington D.C. The mall operates across three whole floors and boasts of surfaced car parking and car terrace facilities.

Mall History

Since Tysons Corner Center happened to be one of the first super-regional malls in the whole country, it managed to draw huge number of crowds from a multi-state area. The shopping complex currently boasts of four different department store anchors viz. Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Lord & Taylor. JC Penney also happened to be one of the anchors of the mall but the 2005 expansion saw it being replaced by a 16-screen AMC multiplex movie theater, an Old Navy store, and a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Tysons Corner Center boasts of a rich and memorable heritage and apart from being the largest shopping center in the metropolitan area, it is the 13th biggest one in the overall United States. The mall is often referred to as the “Tysons I” in order to set it apart from its more upscale counterpart, the Tysons Galleria, which opened its doors to the public in 1988, and operates across the street from the original Tysons Street Corner.

Specialty Retail Services of the Mall

Since the time it opened in the 90s, the Tysons Corner Center Mall has had a wide and eclectic retail mix. Woolworth’s, the discount retail chain, operated a store in the mall until the whole chain shut down in 97. The mall was the site of Hot Shoppes cafeteria as well as Smart Fix, which is a new store that caters to customers looking to get their broken tablets and phones fixed. They also offer Apple iPhone battery replacement. Since it changed ownership in the 2000s, the shopping mall re-tenanted with more upscale stores to better fit the demographics of the surrounding region. Tysons Corner Center has served a Launchpad for a variety of successful retail chains. Some of the most prominent brand names in the mall, consist of Martin + Osa, Cusp by Neiman Marcus, Apple, LL Bean, Garage, Victoria’s Secret and Pottery Barn.
