Westfield Montgomery Mall

Westfield Montgomery Mall is an upscale shopping center situated in Bethesda, Maryland, on Democracy Boulevard close to the Capital Beltway and Interstate 270. Earlier known as Montgomery Mall, the property was purchased by the Westfield Group in the year 1994 who added the “Westfield” prefix to the name of the mall around 1999.

History of the Mall

The mall opened its door to customers in March 1968 and at the time, there were only three anchor stores and 58 smaller shops but the time October 1991 rolled in, the mall had undergone its final renovations which included new floors, brass railings and glass elevators. However, the latter were removed in 2013 along with the wishing well which was a popular attraction at the mall, and was commonly referred to as the region’s very own Fountain of Bethesda. The 1991 grand re-opening of the famous shopping complex featured a concert by Jazz legend, Tony Bennett. A new wing was added to the building and it featured the very first Nordstrom store in the entire region of Maryland apart from being the third one in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. Crate & Barrel were added to the list of stores to open shop at the mall while the second level was occupied by the Boulevard Cafes food court.

In 2007, plans to expand the mall by 360,000 square feet met with approval and this move meant that the Westfield Montgomery Mall now measured over 1,500,000 square feet, making it the fourth biggest mall in the entire Washington region. The Westfield Corporation, which is known for its sharp business strategies, enlarged the Macy’s and moved the Sears Automotive Center. A decision to add a promenade, outdoor seating, restaurants and smaller shops were soon realized and a new transit center was formed in order to consolidate the different public bus routes throughout the area.

Unique Services at the Mall

There are plenty of restaurants at the mall serving diverse cuisine and customers can unwind at the double level Westfield Dining Terrace, which was completed in fall 2014. Around the same time, the first ArcLight Cinemas outside San Diego and Los Angeles opened up at the Westfield Montgomery Mall and the design of the building has been updated to add new lighting fixtures and handrails, plenty more seating, parking indicator lights and new signs which now make it convenient to navigate the vehicles. Smartfix is present in the mall which deals with the repair of broken tablets and mobile devices. They can extend iPhone battery life by offering battery replacement.
